Miass Tuberculosis Project -- Overview
The World Health Organization estimates that a third of the world's population (1.5 billion people) is infected with Tuberculosis. This disease is the world's leading cause of adult death due to infectious disease, killing 3,000,000 people per year. In addition, resistant strains are on the rise due to mutations in the virus leading to increased treatment challenges. There has been a 60 percent increase in the documented cases of tuberculosis in Miass from 1994 to 2003. The Miass Anti-Tuberculosis Health Center in the Chelyabinsk Oblast of Russia serves the patients in this region. However, because funds are lacking, the center is in a state of disrepair and does not have adequate supplies and equipment to effectively treat and follow up on their patients.
